Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)

Not all vein issues are just cosmetic. Varicose veins are the result of damaged valves inside the veins in your legs. Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) ® is an FDA-approved varicose vein treatment offered at Vein Care Specialists in our Lakeland, Florida location. EVLT is a laser treatment that is an alternative to old-fashioned and less effective vein stripping surgery. Unlike vein stripping, this office-based treatment is quick and virtually pain-free. Most patients return to normal activity within a day or so.

During EVLT®, a thin laser fiber is guided by ultrasound into the vein to deliver laser heat to the diseased vein wall. This causes the vein to close and eliminates the venous reflux at its source. Healthy veins around the closed vein restore the normal flow of blood. After a few weeks, symptoms from the varicose veins improve and unsightly veins on the surface of the skin usually shrink.

Before EVLT®, an ultrasound of your legs will be performed to allow the creation of a customized, individual treatment plan. What to expect from EVLT®

A local anesthetic or “numbing medicine” is applied to the leg and the vein is entered with a very small needle. The laser fiber is inserted into the vein and produces laser energy that shrinks and seals the vein wall. Compression hose are usually worn for two weeks. Walking immediately after the procedure is encouraged. Normal daily activity can be resumed; just avoid strenuous physical activities such as high-impact aerobics or weightlifting for the first 72 hours.

There may be minor soreness and bruising. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain relievers.

Consultation for EVLT®

During your initial consultation at Vein Care Specialists at our Lakeland, FL office, you will be asked several questions and your legs will be examined by our vein care specialist. Our vein care specialist will ask you about any problems you may have with your legs, such as pain, aching, itching or tenderness. You will also be asked about your medical history, medications you take, or conditions that would preclude you from having treatment.

You will be checked for signs of more serious deep vein problems, often indicated by swelling, sores, or skin changes at the ankle.
