Varithena® Varicose Vein Treatment in Lakeland, FL

Varithena® (polidocanol injectable foam) is the first and only FDA–approved foam to help treat varicose veins and improve the symptoms of superficial venous incompetence. The accredited Vein Care Specialists Lakeland clinic offers Varithena® as a varicose vein treatment option for our patients. During the Varithena procedure in our vein office, the foam is injected into the diseased vein and irritates the lining of the vein, causing it to close. Eventually, the closed vein is absorbed by the body and disappears.

It is a more versatile treatment option in that it can be used on veins where thermal procedures (EVLT, RFA) may not be practical or possible.

Treatment with Varithena® is a minimally invasive and non-surgical procedure that requires fewer needle sticks and less discomfort than other varicose vein treatments. Varithena improves symptoms including heaviness, achiness, swelling, throbbing and itching.  However, this procedure is not appropriate for patients with blood clots or who are allergic to the chemical sclerosant foam. To learn more about Varithena and your varicose vein treatment options, please call our Lakeland vein clinic at (863) 577-0269 for your consultation.

Benefits of Varithena® include:

  • Treatment in less than an hour
  • Considered to be the least traumatic form of non-thermal vein treatment
  • Can be performed in the doctor’s office
  • No general anesthesia or hospitalization
  • Return to normal activity immediately – with little or no pain
  • Up to 94% success rate
  • Immediate relief of symptoms
  • No scars or stitches — the procedure does not require a surgical incision
  • Many insurance carriers cover Varithena based on medical necessity for symptom relief

What to expect from Varithena

The area to be treated is first numbed using a local anesthetic. A very small catheter is inserted into the affected vein, and a small amount of the Varithena sclerosant is slowly injected. The foam evenly fills the vein, causing it to collapse and close.

After the procedure, a bandage is applied to the injection site and compression hose will be placed on the treated leg, which you will wear for 24 hours. You can resume normal activities after the procedure.
